Rijeka, Croatia

from: 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2011

DodoLab was in residence June 7-20, 2010, to actively engage with the public and to explore perceptions of Rijeka. Our work during this period was developed during two R&D visits in Janaury and April. We worked collaboratively and publicly to examine ideas about the city and its future with a particular emphasis on the role of young people. We worked with a number of people and organizations in the community including Hartera Music Festival, Rijeka City Puppet Theatre, artist Tomislav Brajnovic, youth organizer Lea Perenic and a number of local students. We also brought with us students from Canada and UK artists Alice Angus (proboscis) and Dane Watkins. We staged and experimented with a number of unique projects (including surveys, poster campaigns and performances) with the goal of getting people thinking and talking about their community in creative and meaningful ways.

The first phase of our program was concentrated around the Hartera Music Festival (June 10-12). The second phase coincided with the Musagetes Café (June 14-17) and featured a mobile mini cafe that moved about the city. The final phase involved a youth field work and publishing workshop documenting aspects of the city (June 18-19). All projects were site-specific, encouraged alternative explorations of the urban space and used communication and social tools (such as posters, tagging, personal media devices, puppet figures and outdoor cafes) that are ubiquitous in the city. Our goal was to enhance the Musagetes Café inititative and to open doors to further collaboration and engagement with Rijeka for 2011. Over the coming year, with the additional support of Musagetes, we will be returning to Rijeka to both present material from last year, complete intitiatives and build on the research we accumulated. Alice Angus is now completing a new film about the market in Rijeka (with the support of Lea Perenic) and we are planning to present this in the community in 2011. We have a commitment from the City Puppet Theatre to develop the collaborarion we started and field tested last year into a more considered and planned intervention and presentation. We will be working again with our core group of students in the city to further develop the mini café interventions, to engage with a Roma community we visited, and will be following up our poster project with a new graphic/image intervention continuing the link/dialogue with the city of Sudbury that we established in 2010.
