LAWNS OF A SPECULATIVE FUTURE

HARBOURFRONT CENTRE ART GALLERY
AS PART OF SUBURBIA EXHIBITION
TORONTO, CANADA |  2014

Lawns of a Speculative Future is an exploration of the lawn which considers this iconic element of the suburban landscape in the context of the major economic, political and ecological uncertainties we currently find ourselves within. Neither entirely apocalyptic nor utopian, the work imagines the ecological future of this abundant suburban space with speculative alterations and appendages to otherwise recognizable suburban forms. The work considers the latent possibilities of this grassy terrain, wondering how its promise of abundance might be activated in an unpredictable future. Lawns of a Speculative Future also offers viewers a gift of seeds to be planted in the place of grass—a way of drawing them into the speculation and opening other possibilities for the present and future.
