SOUVENIRS OF VICTORIA PARK
CONFEDERATION CENTRE ART GALLERY + ART IN THE OPEN
IN COLLABORATION WITH LAURA KNAP & ANDREW HAYDON
CHARLOTTETOWN, CANADA | 2011
Souvenirs of Victoria Park is a playful community co-creation project exploring the prolific presence of “Victoria Parks” in cities and towns across Canada, questioning how we understand the symbolic dimensions of these colonially named parks in relation to everyday experiences of recreational green space. It plays with the idea of the souvenir t-shirt picked up by so many travelers during summer holidays, at once celebrating the common park and obscuring its origins with its non-specific Victoria Park title. The t-shirts were each hand-stenciled by participants, a playful way of surveying them, allowing them to complicate their Victoria park, and gifting them a souvenir of the project.
