THE THETFORD TRAVELING MENAGERIE
CURATED BY DEBORAH SMITH WITH BRECKLAND COUNCIL
THETFORD, UNITED KINGDOM | 2011
The Thetford Traveling Menagerie is a multi-faceted project in the city of Thetford (U.K.) that centers around a series of animal fables. These fables combined collected historical facts and myths with new materials inspired by the ongoing history of Thetford and the surrounding region. The animals were used as an invitation and conversation prompt for people in the community to share their own perceptions of the town in ways that sidestepped common and oft-repeated tropes about the town. The project combined interventions, including graphic banners on the main street; collaborations with local groups, such as the “Knit and Knatters”; and participatory events in the local market. The aim was to interrupt ways of thinking and speaking about a place where stories very often define and propagate negative perceptions of the town.
