SINGING IN PUBLIC

Singing in Public is a project created in collaboration with the University of Guelph Chamber Choir about public space and the conditions that make creative intervention possible and safe for different people. Using the vulnerable activity of spontaneously singing in public as a way of measuring space, the choir moved through downtown Guelph singing when they felt comfortable and able to do so. With the group offering a level of safety and comfort to each other, we were able to observe together where and when different members of the choir felt able to sing, a testing of public space and its possibilities. The project aimed to open up conversation around creative practice in public space and the ways that what is possible to different artists is often very different. It also aimed to explore how artists can collectively support each other in accessing public practice.
